The High Court has required a list of Bangladeshi migrant workers killed or injured during construction of hotels and stadiums in Qatar meant for FIFA World Cup.

A division bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order on Monday following a writ petition.

On December 13 last year, Supreme Court lawyer Masood R Sobhan had filed the writ with the HC quoting media reports on deaths of 6,500 people from South Asia including 450 Bangladeshi migrant workers for the reason during 10 years from 2010 and 2022.

He referred to reports of the BBC and CNN to substantiate his claim over deaths and injuries of migrant workers in Qatar during the period in question.

The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to show cause as to why the FIFA World Cup Bangladeshi victims shall not be compensated adequately.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment in Bangladesh will have to submit list of the victims.
