Bail hearing against Fakhrul, Abbas in Nayapaltan clash case Thursday

A Dhaka court today fixed Thursday (December 15) for holding a hearing on the bail petition of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party's standing committee member Mirza Abbas in a case lodged over the clash between party men and police at Nayapaltan in the capital.
 
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Rezaul Karim passed the order as the defence pleaded for their bail again.
 
On December 13, the court scrapped bail pleas of 224 BNP leaders and activists, including Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP convener M Abdus Salam, BNP publicity secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon, former MP Fazlul Haque Milan and former MP Salim Reza Habib.
 
On December 9, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim sent them to jail as police produced the two BNP leaders before the court from the detective branch (DB) office around 4:10 pm.
 
During the hearing, police pleaded to keep them behind the bars till the end of the probe in the case.
 
DB arrested BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Friday (December 9).
 
In this regard, DB Chief Mohammad Harun or Rashid said "Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas were brought for questioning. They were arrested as they were instructors of the BNP-Police clash on December 7."
 
A man was killed and several others, including policemen, were injured in the clash in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on December 7.
 
Police filed the case against 473 leaders and activists of the BNP and another 1,500- 2,000 unnamed people, with the capital's Paltan Police Station.
