OMS rice in Mithapukur: Beneficiaries complain of weight manipulation, charging extra money

Popular News

OMS rice dealer at Mirzapur Union of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur Md Musa Miah, organising secretary of the Union Swechchhasebak League, has been accused of weight manipulation while distributing rice, charging extra money and not providing rice after taking beneficiaries' signature in the name of UNO.

The Directorate General of Food has issued a show cause notice to the dealer as to why legal measures, including cancellation of his dealership, will not be taken. However, the concerned dealer claimed the allegations brought against him as false.

Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer's Office, Directorate General of Food and Union Parishad sources informed that there have been continuous irregularities in the distribution of OMS rice at dealer Musa Mia's Shib Bazar sales center. Each consumer was given 25 to 26 kg of rice instead of 30 kg. The dealer also charged price of Tk 460 against the price of Tk 450 set by the government.

Not only that, many beneficiaries alleged that the dealer did not distribute rice after taking their signature in the name of UNO. Apart from this, if anyone protests against it, he threatened to remove that person’s name from the list of beneficiaries.

The victims made a written complaint against the dealer to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and several local newspapers published the news about the allegation. In this context, Upazila Food Controller Amulya Kumar Sarkar issued a letter to the dealer on November 13 after investigation. In the letter, a satisfactory explanation is sought within three days as to why legal action including cancellation of dealership will not be taken against the dealer Musa Miah. Appropriate action will be taken against him if the allegation of irregularities, including weight manipulation, charging extra money, resorting to falsehood in the name of UNO, are proved.

It is known that although 26 days have passed since the issuance of the letter, the food department has not taken any effective measurers in this regard.

At least 25-30 beneficiaries, including Kartik Burman and Razia Sultana of local Shibbazar area, Mortuza Begum and Chabu Mia of Muradpur, Rozina Begum and Sadiqul Islam of East Muradpur, Shaheen Mia and Golnahar Begum, said, “They have informed the matter to the DC office and the local journalists. When the Upazila Food Office sent a letter to the dealer Musa Mia, he got angry with us. He also threatened us to remove our names from the list. He keeps telling us that no matter how many letters have been issued, nothing will happen. He is providing less OMS rice as before, charging extra money. No one can do anything about it. As a result we are in panic.”

When asked about the matter to the President of Mirzapur Union Awami League Ekramul Haque Majnu Miah, he said, “Food friendly program is a breakthrough step of the present government. But, if any dealer resorts to such irregularities, it will damage the image of the government. So, proper action should be taken after investigation.”

But the accused Musa Mia denied the allegation and said, “This is a conspiracy against me. I responded to the explanation sought by the food office within three days. All the allegations made are false. I have also informed the upazila Awami League leaders, including Rashek Rahman."

Mithapukur Upazila Food Controller Amulya Kumar said that the dealer Musa Miah has responded to the request for clarification. But it was not satisfactory. Appropriate action will be taken against him by investigating the matter, he added. This official also said that the investigation process will start next week.

Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fatematuzjohra said, “We have asked him for an explanation after reading the news in the media. Now, proper action will be taken against him after investigation.”
