Sheikh Russel reach Independence Cup final beating champions Abahani 3-2 (updated)

The former champions Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd reached the final of the ongoing 12th Independence Cup final after beating the reigning champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd by 3-2 goals in the first semifinal at Bir Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj on Wednesday.

Sheikh Russel KC clinched the title of this prestigious domestic football competition beating Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in 2013.

Then, the giants entered into the final in 2018, but their title hope was shattered after conceding a 1-2 goals defeat to another prominent outfit Bashundhara Kings.

Sheikh Russel KC emerged unbeaten champions from the four-team Group A with 2-0, 3-0 wins over Navy, Mohammedan SC and a 1-1 draw with Fortis FC. Then, they beat Chittagong Abahoni Ltd by 1-0 goals in the quarters. They were dreaming of the Independence Cup title again this year.

The club authority thanked Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir, who reorganized the club from the beginning of the ongoing season and motivated them to clinch all major domestic titles of this season.

On Wednesday, Sheikh Russel’s Ivorian midfielder Kephi Jean Charles Didier Brossou, Nigerian forward Mfon Sunday Udoh and Uzbek defender Timur Talipov scored one each in the 31st, 54th and 72nd minutes while Abahani’s Nigerian forward Peter Nworah and Costa Rican forward Daniel Colindres scored one each in the 64th and 90+5th minute.

Meanwhile, Bashundhara Kings will play against Police Football Club today at Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj at 1 pm.

Kings emerged champions with an all win record from Group B as they beat Fakirerpool YMC by 14-0, Azampur Football Club Uttara by 3-0 and Ctg Abahoni by 2-0 goals. They beat Mohammedan by 2-0 in the quarters.

Police FC beat Rahmatganj MFS by 4-0 and Sheikh Jamal DC by 4-3 goals while played 1-1 draw with BFF Elite Academy in the Group D affairs. They beat Muktijoddha SKC by 5-4 goals in the quarters.
