82 gold bars seized in Jashore

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 82 gold bars, weighing 9.558 kg, from Panch Bhulat border area in Sharsha upazila of Jashore on Thursday.

Mehedi Hasan, son of Abdul Karim of Putkhali village under Benapole Port Thana, left the gold bars in the border area and fled away.

Khulna-21 BGB Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Tanveer Rahman said there was information that a large consignment of gold would be smuggled out through Rahmatpur village of Panch Bhulat border area. After knowing it, a motorcyclist named Mehedi was asked to stop. At that time Mehedi fell down while escaping with a motorcycle. In this situation, the members of BGB tried to catch him but he left the motorcycle and ran away. Later, 82 gold bars were found hidden inside the motorbike.

The estimated market value of the seized gold is Tk 6.78 crore. The gold bars will be handed over to Sharsha Police Station. Attempts are being made to arrest the fugitive Mehedi in this incident, he added.
