MOSCOW: The Russian Paralympic Committee plans to appeal to the international community including the UN, the IOC and international rights groups for people with disabilities following the decision by the International Paralympic Committee to suspend the Russian organization, RPC President Pavel Rozhkov told TASS on Wednesday.

IPC members voted 64-39 in favor of suspension, with 16 abstentions.

"The RPC intends to appeal to the general international community and organizations including to send an open letter to the UN, IOC and international rights groups for people with disabilities with a request to urge the IPC to prevent a discrimination of Russian athletes with disabilities on the basis of ethnicity and an encroachment on their rights to participate in international sports competitions and Paralympic Games by suspending all membership rights of the RPC in the IPC. The RPC is reviewing potential options to defend its rights," Rozhkov said.

Under the IPC decision, the RPC forfeits all rights in the organization, except for the right to appeal. If the appeal is turned down, the suspension could be overturned only by the general assembly. The IPC is expected to hold its next general assembly in the fourth quarter of 2023.
