RpCC elections: 36 hours given to remove billboards

On the eve of the elections of the Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), Returning Officer Abdul Baten has ordered the removal of banners, festoons and campaign billboards placed in favor of potential candidates in the city within 36 hours.

"For this, publicity will be done. Necessary steps will be taken. Everyone's cooperation is needed to complete a fair election," he said at a views-exchange meeting today on the occasion of the RpCC elections.

The event was held at the conference room of Rangpur regional election office in the city.

Rangpur District Election Officer Farhad Hossain, Nilphamari District Election Officer Fazlul Karim, Rangpur Sadar Upazila Election Officer Rezaul Islam, other officials and journalists attended the meeting.

Returning Officer Abdul Baten said the Election Commissioner has taken the Rangpur City Corporation elections as a challenge.

"We have taken responsibility to take on this challenge. We will face this challenge with everyone's cooperation. For this, cooperation of all political parties is required. A peaceful election is possible if everyone cooperates," he said.

He said Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been used in some centers in the Rangpur City Corporation elections previously.

"EVMs will be used in the third Rangpur City Corporation elections to be held on December 27 next. Every polling station will be covered by close circuit TV (CCTV) cameras," he said.

Earlier, the Returning Officer held an exchange meeting with the election officers of all eight districts of Rangpur division at the same venue.

It may be mentioned here that the Election Commission on November 7 last announced the schedule of Rangpur City Corporation elections to be held on December 27 next.

According to the schedule, the last day for filing of nominations is November 29.

Nomination papers will be scrutinized on December 1 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is December 8. Poll symbols will be distributed on December 9.
