47 fishermen held for violating Hilsha ban in Bhola

Mobile court in separate drives arrested 47 fishermen along with Hilsha and fishing boats in the last 12-hour from the rivers Tentulia and Meghna in the district for defying the government's ongoing 22-day ban on Hilsha fishing.

Later, the mobile court sentenced them to different terms of imprisonment.

Fisheries Department Office sources said a total of 47 fishermen were arrested with eight mounds of Hilsha fish and three fishing boats during the three drives in the rivers Tentulia and Meghna.

Among them, the mobile court sentenced 41 fishermen to different terms of jail, two fishermen fined Taka 5000 each, four fishermen fined Taka 3000 each and the rest of the fishermen were sent to jail with a case, the sources said.

The seized Hilsha has been distributed to the poor people in the area.

The government has imposed a 22-day ban starting from October 7 on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsha, to ensure safe spawning of the Mother Hilsha, during its peak breeding period.
