Different militant groups, including Jamaatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, have selected remote and inaccessible places of Bandarban and Rangamati hill districts as safe havens for militant training and other organisational activities.

Militants have taken hilly regions for arms training, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) told a press briefing on Friday.

The elite force has gotten the information following the arrest of seven militants and three KNF members along with weapons in a joint drive in the districts on Thursday night.

During preliminary interrogation, the arrested gave important information about their militant training.

More than 50 youths are now undergoing militant training at several training camps of Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) in remote areas of the hill districts.

The arrested have revealed names of the Jamaatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya Ameer and six important members of its Shura committee, RAB said.

Jamaatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya Ameer is Anisur Rahman alias Mahmud and its Shura committee members are Abdullah Maimun, Head of Dawati Branch; Masukur Rahman of the military branch; Maruf Ahmed, the second person in the military wing, Finance and Media Branch Mosharraf Hossain and Chief Advisor Shamim Mahfuz.

Khandaker Al Moin, director of RAB's law and media wing, disclosed the information at a press conference at Bandarban Zilla Parishad Auditorium on Friday noon.

Moin said a secret hideout of KNF and militants was destroyed in an operation on October 10.

Since the operation, seven militants were arrested in Saizampara and three KNF members in Rawangchari Bazar area of the district.

Nine SBBL cartridge guns, 50 bullets, 62 cartridge cases, six Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), a country-made pistol, a walkie-talkie, uniforms and other equipment were seized from their possession.

The arrested militants are Imran Hossain alias Shaon (31), son of Shah Alam of Pirojpur, Syed Maruf Ahmad alias Manik (31), son of late Syed Abul Kalam of Sunamganj, Kawsar Shishir (46), son of late Gholam Kibria of Jhenaidah, Jahangir Ahmed alias Janu 27, son of Faizul Haque of Sylhet Bianibazar, Mohammad Ibrahim Ali (19), son of Nayan Mridha of Barisal, Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Bappi (23), son of Atiqul Alam of Sylhet, Rufu Mia (26), son of Abdus Salam of Chhatak in Sylhet.

The arrested KNF members are Jouthan Sang Bum (19), son of Lalmun Soi Bum, Stephen Bum (19), son of Lalmin Sam Bum and Malsam Bum (20), son of Jik Bill Bum of Rawangchari Bazar area.

It was informed in the press conference that after the arrest of 10 people, the names of seven more militants have been found. Earlier, the RAB revealed names of 38 militants in a press conference in Dhaka on October 10.

Al Moin said the KNF trains militants in their hideouts on the basis of contracts in exchange for money.

Only one militant hideout has been destroyed in the operation so far. There are many more hidden hideouts. As long as the campaign is needed, the campaign will continue.

On October 17, the government announced a ban on tourists travelling to the hilly regions bordering India and Myanmar after launching the anti-militancy operation of RAB and Bangladesh Army.
