Delhi govt withdraws Rs 500 fine for not wearing masks in public places

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Thursday issued an order withdrawing the Rs 500 fine for not wearing masks in public places in the national capital.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) had in a meeting last month decided to stop levying the penalty after September 30 amid a decline in Covid-19 cases in the national capital. However, no official notification had been issued

DDMA met in September after a gap of five months to review the Covid situation ahead of the festival season and assess dedicated resources deployed at hospitals to tackle the disease. The meeting was chaired by LG VK Saxena and attended by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, his cabinet colleagues, chief secretary Naresh Kumar, senior bureaucrats and experts from various agencies.

On March 31, DDMA had decided not to levy fines for not wearing face masks in public places, but it reimposed the penalty within three weeks after an uptick in test positivity rate and increase in daily cases of Covid-19.
