Jatiya Party Chairman and the former President HM Ershad on Thursday said that the government should apologise for the incident where a baby being shot in the mother’s womb during Awami League factional clash in Magura.
30-year-old Najma Begum, an expected mother was shot on July 23 in a shooting incident took place during a factional clash between Magura Juba League activist Kamrul Bhuiyan’s supporters and former Juba League supporters Mohammad Ali and ‘Ajibor’.
Doctors in Magura performed surgery on Najma to save her child on that night. Two days later, the infant was transferred to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Expressing deep concern, Ershad said, “I am stunned to see how brutal people can be. Baby shot in mother’s womb...how can that happen? The government should apologise.”
Frustrated with the recent incidents of child abuse across Bangladesh, the former military dictator also demanded capital punishment for the guilty. He urged the government to ensure the most stringent and exemplary punishments for those responsible.
“In the last three years, 767 children died across the country. All this is happening because the perpetrators know they will go scot-free,” Ershad added.
He further expressed disappointment over the ‘culture of impunity’.
