CHATTOGRAM: Different non-government organisations working in Chattogram staged demonstrations on Thursday, protesting conspiracies against the Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) who is working wholeheartedly to develop the city by recovering land from the grabbers.
They also protested the levelling of hills and the grabbing of land by some local influential people.
Non-government organisation ELLMA Chief Executive and woman rights leader Jasmin Sultana Paru presided over the programme.
The speakers at the programme said that the country is now on the highway of development under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Chattogram DC Md Mominur Rahman is working relentlessly to accelerate the overall development by recovering state properties from the land grabbers following the directives of the Prime Minister.
However, when the administration began the process of developing structures after recovering 3,100 acres of land in the Jungle Saliimpur, a vested quarter began hatching a plot against him.
They are trying to transfer the DC from Chattogram through falsehood and propaganda, alleged the speakers, adding that the development of Chattogram will be hindered if the DC is removed.
The speakers also said that a group of land grabbers is destroying the natural environment by cutting hills and trees. Those who are developing housing projects by cutting hills illegally overnight or instigating the destruction of hills should be identified and brought under trial.
They added that deforestation should not be allowed to ensure ecological balance, and everyone should remain aware of this.
Shopnil Bright Foundation Coordinator Md Ali Sikder conducted the programme while Juba League city unit leader MR Azim, Orjon Foundation Chief Executive Abida Azad, Bright Bangladesh Forum Chief Executive Utpal Barua, Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh (ADAB) Vice President Mostafa Kamal Jatra, Divisional Coordinator Md Forkan and representatives from different NGOs addressed the programme expressing solidarity.
