Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has clinched the silver and bronze medals in the men and women’s chess events of the ongoing Bangabandhu Inter-University Sports Championship. Amit Bikram Roy, who is from the IUB ARROWS program and a 3rd semester student of CSE, won silver in men’s chess, and Zannatul Mawa Mowri, last semester student of Environmental Science and Management, won bronze in the women’s division.
A total of 86 chess players from 33 universities competed in the 4-day event, held in the Multipurpose Hall of IUB from September 11-14, 2022. On the final day, Mr. Mesbah Uddin, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, handed over the medals to the winners.
He also said, “What makes these achievements extremely significant is that the female students of IUB are also stepping up. It is a testament to our commitment towards giving the girls, who constitute more than 40% of the current IUB student population, a fair shot at realizing their potential.”
The championship is being organized this year to mark the golden jubilee of independence and the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, this is the third edition of the championship. Around 7,000 students from 125 public and private universities are taking part in 12 events including football, cricket, swimming, athletics, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, handball, kabaddi, chess, cycling and badminton.
