Youths called to uphold press freedom on the International Day of Democracy

On the occasion of International Day of Democracy, there was an online meeting organized today (September 15, 2022) by youths from left behind communities with support from Bangladesh Manobadhikar Sangbadik Forum (BMSF).

Abdullah Al Mohan, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Bhasantek Government College, Dhaka presented keynote paper. Discussion was moderated by Mathew Chiran, UNDP-trained youth leader and human rights defenders.  

International Day of Democracy is globally observed today with particular focus on the freedom of media. It principally marks the importance of media freedom to democracy, peace, and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Prominent Journalist Khairuzzaman Kamal, Executive Director of BMSF, Kazi Sameeo Sheesh, faculty of Dhaka University and Ahad Uddin Haidar, President of Bagerhat Press Club spoke as panel discussants. Sumita Rabidas, Bivuti Mahato, Olik Mree, Champa Naidu, Savitri Hembrom and other youth leaders from left behind community shared perspectives on democracy while speaking on the issue.

“Despite facing many challenges, Bangladesh has made progresses in flourishing democracy. However, there is still rooms for improvement and obstacles are there”- said Mohan while presenting his keynote paper. He highlighted important role played by media and suggested greater involvement of youths to uphold press freedom.
