SUST teachers besiege office after VC resumed

Teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have besieged the vice chancellor’s office demanding his resignation after the VC Aminul Haque Bhuiyan resumed his office after a two-month leave.

Pro-government teachers gathered at the VC’s office from 11.00 am to 01.00 pm on Tuesday demanding resignation of  the VC.

The VC went on a two-month leave amid an agitation by the same group of teachers. He promised them he would resign after his leave. However, he did not step down from the post.

Earlier in the day, the VC resumed his office after a two-month leave.

Convener of the protesting teachers’ group Professor Syed Samsul Alam handed a letter to the VC requesting his resignation. Later, he read out the letter for protesting teachers.

A tense situation has been prevailing on the SUST campus for several months over VC’s resignation.

The tension was generated on the SUST campus on April 13 when 19 teachers from the physics department and geography and environment department of the university went to hold a talk with the VC over space allocation between the departments on April 15.

Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque, head of the physics department, and Prof Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin, head of the geography and environment science department, resigned on the same day following the alleged misconduct of the VC.

On April 20, thirty-five resigned from different administrative posts demanding the removal of university Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.

On April 23, Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan went on a two-month leave amid protest in the university in demand of his resignation.
