The government has decided to increase the fare for vehicles to cross the ferries by 20 percent across the country due to the increase in the price of fuel.

Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Shamim Al Razi said that the new fare will be effective from today.

Earlier on June 16, the ferry fare was increased by 20 percent due to the rise in fuel prices. With the latest hike, the fare was increased by more than 40 percent in two months.

According to BIWTC data, ferries are now operated on six routes— Paturia-Daulatdia, Aricha-Kazir Hat, Shimulia-Banglabazar/Majhirkandi, Chandpur-Shariatpur, Bhola-Laxmipur and Laharhati-Veduria.

Until the new fare hike, a one-tonne goods-laden vehicle had to pay Tk 880, a big bus Tk 2,100, a microbus Tk 1,000 and a motorcycle Tk 100 for the River Padma through the Paturia-Daulatdia Ghat.

Some 20 percent fare will be added to it from today.
