Saheb Mandal, main accused in a case filed over attack on four journalists in Lalmonirhat, have been arrested.

Sadar police station OC Ershadul Alam confirmed the arrest on Sunday.

Following a case filed by injured Jamuna TV reporter Anisur Rahman, police started drive and arrested main accused Saheb Mandal from Singardabri area.

“We have heaved a sigh of relief following arrest of the main accused. Three other accused in the case are at large.”

Four journalists were injured following a criminal attack on them during discharge of professional duties in Lalmonirhat.

Sources said 20-25 cadres of Saheb Mandal, son of Panchagram union Awami League president and former UP member Azizur Rahman Mandal, carried out the attack on Friday.

The injured are reporters Anisur Rahman of Jamuna TV, Abdur Rab of Prothom Alo, Mahfuzul Islam of Ekhon TV and cameraperson Ahsan Sakib of Jamuna TV.

Conditions of Anisur Rahman and Mahfuzul Islam were critical for sustaining deep injury in the forehead and hand respectively.

They received treatment at the Lalmonirhat sadar hospital.

Besides, video camera, tripod and helmet were damaged. 

According to the case dossier, the attack ensued as journalists went to the house of Azizur Rahman Mandal to know about his son’s elopement with and marriage to wife of another person in the area.

Saheb allegedly eloped with Loveli Begum, wife of Badrul Hasan of Sinduria village under Panchagram union, on August 7 night.

Loveli’s husband Badrul filed a general diary with Lalmonirhat sadar police station in this regard on August 9.

It may be noted that Saheb Mandal has two children with his first wife. Same is the case with Loveli.

As the journalists were leaving house of Saheb Mandal, 20-25 of his assigned cadres intercepted them and carried out attack.
