A wrong signal by railway gatekeeper in Lalmonirhat allegedly put hundred lives in danger on Sunday.

Nearly seven intercity, mail and local trains run through BDR gate level crossing of Lalmonirhat town in 24 hours.

The crossing has divided Lalmonirhat town into two parts with sadar hospital, fire service, police station, upazila parishad and various educational institutions in the one side while district court, DC office, SP office and government college in the other.

Sources said Paribatipur-Burimari commuter train bearing number 71 reached Lalmonirhat station Sunday afternoon. After half an hour, it left the station for Burimari.

Nader Hossain, gatekeeper in BDR area level crossing, downed the barrier halting movement of hundred commuters and vehicles on both sides. But the train was coming via the line where people and vehicles remained stuck due to signal. Sensing arrival of the train, the vehicles quickly left the place and people ran away.

The railway authority has withdrawn station master Jamil Uddin  and suspended gatekeeper Nader for the incident.

Shah Sufi Nur Mohammad, divisional railway manager, said “We knew the incident from social media and ordered action against the station master and gatekeeper. An inquiry committee has also been formed.”
