Dy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah laid to rest

Deputy speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard at Gotia in Saghata upazila under Gaibandha district on Monday afternoon following his third namaz-e-janaza.

The valiant freedom fighter was buried beside his two sons’ graves there after a guard of honour by the government.

Earlier, the mortal remains of the veteran politician arrived in Dhaka in the morning. A flight of Emirates Airlines carrying his body from New York reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8:40am.

Fazle Rabbi Miah’s first Namaz-e-Janaza was held around 10:30am at the National Eidgah premises where politicians, lawyers, jurists, colleagues and admirers paid their last tribute to him.

After the janaza, he was paid respect on behalf of the President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Chief justice Hasan Foez Siddique also placed wreath on the coffin of deputy speaker.

Bangladesh Awami League leaders, led by General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and Jatiya Party leaders, headed by the party Chairman GM Quader, also attended the janaza and paid tribute to Fazle Rabbi Miah.

Leaders of other political parties, intellectuals, government officials also placed wreaths on the coffin of the deputy speaker.

Fazle Rabbi’s body was taken to Bonarpara Kazi Azahar Ali High School premises in Saghata Upazila of Gaibandha around 2:00pm by a helicopter of armed forces from Dhaka.

His body was kept at Bharatkhali High School premises in Saghata upazila for people to pay their last tributes where his second Namaz-e-Janaza was held around 3:00pm.

Then his body was taken to his village home in Gotia where he was buried following his third namaz-e-janaza.

Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah, a seven times lawmaker from Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Fulchori), died on July 22 at 3:55pm (NY Time) at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York at the age of 76.

He is survived by his three daughters. His wife Anwara Rabbi passed away in May 2020.
