Suicide attempt by jeweller in front of Faridpur DC office

A jeweller in Faridpur tried to commit suicide for not getting payment as against sold gold.

Gouranga Karmakar took a suicidal attempt by pouring petrol into body in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner Tuesday afternoon.

The incident has sparked a sensation in the area.

Students and cadets of the scouts who gathered in front of the DC office for tree fair rescued him and sent to hospital.

An open letter addressed to district Awami League president Shamim Haque, general secretary Ishtiaq Arif and local mayor Amitav Bose was recovered from his pocket.

Gouranga along with his physically challenged brother got involved in jewellery business in the city. Nayan Jewellers owned by the duo was established 25 years ago.

During Covid 19 stalemate, Gouranga decided to sell off all gold of their shop and deposit the money with any bank.

Ayon Karmakar, a nearby jeweller, expressed his eagerness to buy the gold at an attractive price.
It is learnt that Ayon offered to pay TK 200 higher than the usual price per bhori.

As per condition, the payment should have taken place within a short time. Amid delay in payment, Gouranga insisted on getting the money but he received threats and humiliation in return. Finding no way out, he decided to take his own life.
