Ruling out the possibility of any snap polls, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam here on Saturday said the next election will be held in the stipulated time under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reports UNB.
He, however, said the election can be arranged anytime as per the constitution if the Prime Minister wants so.
“No discussion was held yet in our party forum regarding the mid-term polls. Even, the Prime Minister didn’t discuss the issue with me. Awami League is preparing for taking part in the polls after five years. And the polls will be held under Sheikh Hasina with the participation of all,” he said.
Syed Ashraf was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara marking his 40th death anniversary.
Central leaders of the party were also present. The wreaths were placed as part of the party’s 40-day programme to observe the National Mourning Day.
Syed Ashraf, also the public administration minister, said election can be held anytime as per the constitution if the Prime Minister wants. “The Prime Minister enjoys this power. She can dissolve parliament and write to the President to arrange election.”
He observed that there will be no existence of BNP if it skips the next polls.
The Awami League leader also urged BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to refrain from observing her birthday on August 15, saying she can observe the birthday either on August 16 or 17 even if her genuine birthday is on August 15.
