‘Instigating suicide’ of businessman: Two put on 2-day remand

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed two top officials of Amin Manufacturing Company on a two-day remand each over ‘instigating the suicide’ of businessman Gazi Anis who set himself on fire in front of the Jatiya Press Club.

The accused are Managing Director Nurul Amin and Director Fatema Amin of the company.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Syed Mostafa Reza Noor passed order after the investigating officer of the case Golam Hossain Khan, sub-inspector (SI) of Shahbagh police station, sought a seven-day remand to interrogate them.

The court also rejected the bail pleas of the accused.

On Tuesday evening, Rab detained the duo after conducting a drive in the city’s Uttara area.

Nazrul Islam, a brother of the victim, filed a case with Shahbagh police station on Tuesday accusing the detainees for instigating suicide of the victim, said SI Golam Hossain.

Gazi Anis, 45, a vendor on contract from Kushtia's Kumarkhali upazila, took the extreme step at 5pm on Monday "out of frustration" after Henolux, the company, refused to settle his dues of Tk1.26 crore, according to some journalists.

Journalists and law enforcers present at the scene poured water on him and rushed him to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in a critical condition.

Anis had suffered 85 percent burns and kept on life support at the hospital.

He succumbed to his injuries at 6am Wednesday, said Bacchu Mia, inspector in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police outpost.
