Sufia Kamal’s 111th birth anniversary today

The 111th birth anniversary of poet Sufia Kamal is being observed in the country in a befitting manner today.

A pioneer in the movement for women emancipation, Sufia Kamal was born on June 20, 1911 in Shayestabad Nawab family in Barishal.

During her childhood, women's education was prohibited and she could not afford to get academic education. Nevertheless, she learned Bengali, Hindi, Urdu and Arabic languages at home.

In 1918, she went to Kolkata with her mother where she came to meet with Begum Rokeya.

She was first married at the age of 11 to her cousin Syed Nehal Hossain who was a law student.

President, PM pay tributes to poet Sufia Kamal on 111th birth anniversary

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today paid rich tributes to the memory of poet Begum Sufia Kamal.

They also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Sufia Kamal, who was one of the pioneers of all progressive, democratic and women emancipation movements in Bangladesh, in separate messages issued on the eve of the day.
