One killed, 10 hurt as two ferries collide head-on in Padma

A pickup van driver was killed and another went missing as two ferries collided head-on due to the strong current in the Padma River in the early hours on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as pickup van driver Md Khokon, 40, of Jhalakathi, said SI Sakhwat Hossain of Louhajang Police Station.

Ten others also injured in the accident.

The passenger ferries - Begum Rokeya and Begum Sufia Kamal - collided head-on near Jajira in Shariatpur on the Shimulia-Majhirkandi route at around 3 am Sunday, leaving one dead and ten injured, BIWTC Manager (Commercial) Jamal Hossain said.

The front parts of the two ferries and five vehicles were damaged in the collision, he added.
