Bangladesh Premier League champions Bashundhara Kings’ knockout hope ended as the hosts ATK Mohun Bagan beat Maldivian side Maziya SRC by 2-5 goals in the last match of Group D (South Asian Zone) at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan at Kolkata in West Bengal, India Tuesday night.

The BPL champions earlier kept their knockout (Inter-zone play-off semi-finals) alive after beating Gokulam Kerala FC by 2-1 goals in the day’s other match at the same venue earlier this day.

The Bangladeshi giants earned 6 points from two wins and one defeat while the current I-league champions Gokulam were the first team of this group to be eliminated with 3 points from one win and two consecutive defeats.

Kings were expecting Maziya’s draw or win against Mohun Bagan because If Maziya played a draw against Mohun Bagan, then both these teams -- Maziya and Mohun Bagan -- would have 4 points each which would be enough for the BPL champions to become the group champions and qualify to the knockout phase with the difference of 2 points.

If Maziya could beat Mohun Bagan, then both Kings and Maziya had the same 6 points, but the only Bangladeshi giants would qualify for the next stage due to the bylaws of head-to-head (clause, and as they earlier beat Maziya by 1-0 goal in their first group match last week.

Though Kings and Mohun Bagan had the same 6 points, the Indian side had qualified due to the same bylaws of head-to-head (clause, and as they earlier beat the Bangladeshi outfit by 4-0 goals in their second group match earlier this week.

At Mohun Bagan-Maziya match, Joni Kauko netted twice in the 26th and 37th minutes while Roy Krishna, Subhasish Bose, Carl McHugh added one each in the 56th, 58th and 71st minutes for Mohun Bagan. Tana scored two goals in the 45th and 73rd minutes for Maziya.

At Kings-Gokulam match, Brazilian forward Robson Robinho and Gambian forward scored one each for Kings in the 36th and 54th minutes while Jamaican forward Jourdaine Fletcher netted the consolation goal for Gokulam in the 75th minute.

However, both these two important matches were needed to be held at two different venues on the same day at the same time, so that all four teams could get equal chances.

Previously in the double-leg format, all matches of AFC Cups were to be played in two different venues but at the same time. As per the AFC’s new centralized format due to Covid, two matches take place on the same day at the same venue but one after another.
