A conspiracy to obstruct PM’s cluster village project for homeless in Laksam

Cluster Village Project for homeless people initiated by the Prime Minister at Dokhaiya Chandpur village at Laksam Upazila in Cumilla is facing resistance by a vested quarter.

The government constructed cluster villages in various places of the country to rehabilitate the homeless and destitute marking the Mujib Year.

As part of such programme, it initiated similar villages at different places in Laksam, including one at Dokhaiya Mouza under Gobindapur Union.

Sources said 11 decimals out of 1.44 acres of khas land in the area are earmarked for the project.

The construction of the cluster village for the landless and homeless people lost direction in the midway due to the movement of the family members of Pir Chandpuri Shah and their followers.

Family members of the Pir are alleging that the land of the cluster project belongs to them—a claim rejected by the government officials.

Sources said Pir family members teamed up with hundred others demonstrated to stop the cluster village being constructed for the poor.

The demonstrators targeted a minister and Upazila Nirbahi Officer centring the project.

They gathered in a place with banner and festoons and blocked Dhaka-Chattogram highway. At one stage, they lay on the Paduar Bazar point of the highway. Later, Tanvir Ahmed, Additional Superintendent of Police of Cumilla, rushed to the spot and evicted the demonstrators from the road.

The Pir family members and their supporters chanted indecent slogans creating panic and discontent among the common villagers.

The demonstrating people submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to stop construction of the houses for the poor and homeless.

UNO AKM Saiful Alam said “The Deputy Commissioner is the owner of khas land. The government started construction of 30 houses at various places in Laksam. The government has 1.44 acres of khas land in only Dokhaiya Mouza.”
