Speakers at a programme have demanded that the government ensures child labour free workplaces across the country.

They said although the government made a policy in 2012 to eliminate the child labour in workplaces by 2025, the progress was hardly made.

The speakers said this at the programme titled, 'consultation meeting on the role of trade unions and the press media in eliminating child labour at work.'

International Trade Union Confederation-Bangladesh Council (ITUC-BC) and Labour Rights Journalists Forum (LRJF) jointly arranged the consultation meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Saturday.

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, there are 47 lakh child labourers from five years to 14 years across the country. Of them, about 12 lakh children are engaged in risky work.

The speakers said the government should save the children from the child labour.

Omar Faruk, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan, secretary general of ITUC-BC, Abdul Hannan, president of LRJF, Shakil Akhter Chowdhury and Ataur Rahman spoke among others on the occasion with Anwar Hossain, president of ITUC-BC, in the chair.
