Bashundhara Sports Complex to host BPL matches

Bashundhara Sports Complex, built by the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group at the Bashundhara Residential area in Dhaka, will host the matches of the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League, scheduled to start on February 3.

The ground will also be the home venue of the reigning BPL champions Bashundhara Kings throughout the domestic league season and also the AFC Cup.

A total of seven venues were selected to host the BPL matches for the forthcoming season during a meeting of the Professional Football League Committee of the Bangladesh Football Federation on Tuesday.

The remaining six venues are -- Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj, Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium in Tongi, Sylhet District Stadium in Sylhet, Muktijuddho Smriti Stadium in Rajshahi, Shaheed Dhirendranath Stadium in Cumilla, Shaheed Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshigonj.

“We have initially confirmed seven venues. Among those, Cumilla is still under renovation so the first few matches may not take place there.  We have only one venue in Dhaka which is Bashundhara Sports Complex,” BFF Senior Vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedy told the reporters after the meeting.

“We earlier sent a team to watch the ground facilities -- field’s measurements, gallery distance, dressing room, floodlight etc. Another team will visit within January 25. The complex is the home ground of Bashundhara Kings. We know the area is restricted but the club officials confirmed to us that they will allow every football fan there. They will have their own security besides the law enforcement agencies,” he added.

The complex maintained all international standards including modern dressing room for both home and away teams, match officials, 10000 capacity gallery, VIP boxes, press conference room and press box for proper broadcasting requirements.

Meanwhile, Kings’ head of strategy and planning Bayazid Alam Zubair Nipu informed that the team will not practice there from January 21 to 29 as they will complete the decoration of the ground and venue.

“The team will stay at Sarah Resort from January 21 to 29 because we have to complete the decoration of the venue. The team will practice in Sarah Resort during that time,” he added.
