SC to discharge functions virtually from Wednesday

The Supreme Court will deliver judicial functions from today in the wake of the growing threat posed by Omicron variant of Covid 19.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique came up with the decision on Tuesday allowing virtual court to resume function and continue until further notice.

Following CJ’s decision, the Supreme Court administration issued two separate circulars on judicial function of High Court Division and Appellation through online platform.

During the last in-person court proceedings on Tuesday, Chief Justice said 13 Justices of the High Court, many officers of the apex court and large number of lower court judges have tested positive for Covid-19.

In this situation, it is difficult for the authorities concerned to run in-person court, the Chief Justice opined.
Praising virtual court system, he said the ratio of case disposal in digital platform is higher than in-person system.

He also referred to 11-point directive issued by the government following surge in corona infection cases and justified the virtual judicial functions.

Earlier, on May 9, 2020, President Abdul Hamid by exercising jurisdiction under Article 93(1) of the Constitution promulgated Adalat Kartrik Tottho-Projukti Bebohar Ordinance, 2020.

Empowered by the ordinance, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh issued practice directions to be followed by the Appellate Division, High Court Division, and the subordinate courts and tribunals for hearing cases virtually.
