Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited has given proposal to double the gas price.
The company has proposed to increase the price of one stove from Tk 925 to Tk 2,000 and two stoves from Tk 975 to Tk 2,100.
The company (Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited) is responsible for distribution of gas in greater Noakhali, Cumilla and Chandpur districts. Petrobangla has also asked other companies to submit their proposals in this connection. The proposals will be placed in a day or two, sources added.
In its proposal, Bakhrabad has asked to increase the existing price per cubic meter from Tk 12.60 to Tk 27.37 for the pre-paid meter users in residences, from Tk 35 to Tk 76.04 for CNG, and from Tk 23 to Tk 49.97 per cubic meter for hotel and restaurant.
On the other hand, it has proposed to increase the existing rates in power and fertiliser factories from Tk 4.45 to Tk 9.66.
In the past, no such price-hike proposal was placed. Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has described it as unprecedented.
The Energy Division has a desire to increase subsidies. But the Finance Division has clearly specified it that they are inacapable of increasing the subsidy. It is not possible for them to provide money beyond the budget allocation of Tk 12,500 crore. As a result, the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources is seeing no change other than raising prices.
