Vote counting in Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election began this afternoon after the voting ended at 4:00pm on Sunday.
Awami League nominated candidate Selina Hayat Ivy is leading in the mayoral race as results of vote counts from the centres are being revealed gradually.
Ivy secured 138,926 votes while independent aspirant Taimur Alam Khandaker, with the 'elephant' symbol, has secured 78,963 votes.
Speaking from the District Commissioner’s office, the returning officer also said the turnout for the election had been 50% - although provisional, this is much lower than the 62% in 2016, and 69% in 2011.
Ivy was previously elected twice, in 2011 as an independent candidate when she became the first woman to be elected as mayor in the country, before reelection as the ruling Awami League candidate in 2016.
Narayanganj District Commissioner Mostain Billah said the voting took place almost totally peacefully, although may have lagged a bit due to voter’s inexperience with electronic voting machines.
Ivy cast her ballot at Deobhog Kalarab polling center around 9:30 am while Taimur cast his vote at Masdair Islamia Fazil Madrasha around 10 am.
