UP polls violence: 2 killed in Chattogram, Manikganj

At least two people, including a woman, were killed in clashes between supporters of candidates during fifth phase of the union parishad polls on Wednesday.

In Chattogram, a supporter of a member candidate was killed in a clash between two rival candidates at Chatari union in Anwara upazila.

The deceased was identified as Ankur Dutta, 38, was a supporter of member candidate Dhananjay Biswas.

Ankur was beaten by followers of Raghunath during the clash at 11:30am, leaving him injured, said SM Rashidul Haque, superintendent of police in Chattogram.

Critically injured Ankur was taken to Anwara Upazila Health Complex from where he was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

On-duty doctor at CMCH declared him dead around 1:30pm, said Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of CMCH Police Camp.

Later, additional members of police, and Border Guard Bangladesh brought the situation under control around 2:30pm.

In Manikganj, a woman was killed in a clash between two member supporters near a polling station in Daulatpur upazila.

The deceased was identified as Samela, 50, wife of Mahatab of the area.

Additional Superintendent of Police Tania Sultana said the woman fell in the middle of the clash when it broke out between two member supporters near the center of Government Primary School in Bachamara Union of the upazila.

Locals suspected that the woman might have been died of a heart attack.

Additional police and law enforcers have been deployed at the scene.
