A South African court on Tuesday banned Anglo-Dutch firm Shell from conducting energy exploration using seismic waves off a touristic stretch of coastline, a victory for environmentalists concerned about the impact on marine wildlife.

The High Court in Makhanda ruled that Shell was "hereby interdicted from undertaking seismic survey operations" in a case brought by conservation groups.
