A cigarette advertisement by the Pakistan’s Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), the parent body of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC), inside the wrapper of the ‘pinni prasad’ given to devotees who visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, has sparked a row.

According to sources, an advertisement of ‘Gold Street International’ brand of cigarette, showing a golden-coloured cigarette box, can be seen inside the wrapper.

On the outside, the pinni prasad packet carries the photograph of Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib, with ’Blessings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’, and the other bears an image of Gurdwara Jyoti Jyot Asthan, Sri Guru Nanak Dev, Kartarpur Sahib. Recently, the ETPB was in the news after it allowed a bare-headed woman to hold a photoshoot in the Kartarpur Gurdwara .

A senior Sikh leader of Pakistan told TOI on condition of anonymity, “We have objected several times to use of wrapper with cigarette advertisement for prasad packets to the PSGPC as well as to the officials of ETPB, but no one listened. We also brought the matter to the knowledge of the newly-appointed chief executive officer, project management unit, Mohammad Latif. but to no avail.”

According to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Sikh Rehat Maryada (The Code of Sikh Conduct and Conventions), using tobacco is one among four transgressions (tabooed practices) in Sikhism-.When asked about the cigarette advertisement, Latif replied: “It is of 2019, no such wrapping is available at any shop as of today, it came up a few days back.

”Countering this, sources maintained that the pinni prasad packets with cigarette advertisements were still being distributed among devotees.PSGPC president Ameer Singh didn’t take calls despite several attempts.

Inexcusable, Imran should act: Sirsa BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, has asked Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to take strict action against the persons responsible for using ‘bidi cigarette’ paper for packing the holy prasad of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib.

Talking to TOI, Sirsa said, “this is inexcusable and can’t be taken lightly, Khan should take action and put the persons responsible for this abhorrent act which has left the Sikh hearts severely hurt, behind bars”.
