In the face of demonstrations, the public transport owners have accepted the demand of a 50 percent discount on bus fare for students in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area.

Khandaker Enayet Ullah, general secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association, made the announcement in a briefing on Tuesday.

However, the discounted fare, to be implemented from Wednesday, will only be applied between 7 am and 8 pm and it is not applicable outside the city.

The discount will not apply on government holidays, weekends, and other days when educational institutions are closed.

"Students will have to show ID cards of their schools/colleges while paying half fare,” Enayet Ullah said.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had two meetings with transport leaders to implement half-pass on public transport for students. But these meetings ended without any decision. At the meeting, the bus owners demanded subsidy for implementing the half fare for the students.

Later on November 26, the government decided to reduce fares by half for students travelling on state-owned BRTC buses.
