Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said a law on constitution of Election Commission (EC) will be enacted soon.
He said a bill will be placed in the next or later session to enact a law on formation of the EC.
However, he made it clear that the next Election Commission will not be formed under this law, replying to a query of BNP MPs Harunur Rashid and Rumeen Farhana, Jatiya Party's Mujibul Haque Chunnu and several other MPs. The opposition lawmakers strongly criticised the government for not enacting a laws on constitution of the EC and appointment of higher court judges.
At this stage, Anisul Huq said process of drafting both laws is underway.
On November 28, law minister said enactment of law on constitution of the Election Commission should not be expedited.
He made the comment addressing journalists at his residence at Gulshan in the capital, after a delegation led by Sushashoner Janya Nagorik (Sujan) Secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder called on him and handed over a draft law on EC formation.
Noted lawyer Dr Shahdeen Malik, Syed Abu Naser Bukhtear Ahmed and Professor Rubayet Ferdous were present, among others.
