Sheikh Russel off to winning start in Independence Cup

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra made a winning start in the season curtain raiser Independence Cup as they beat Uttar Baridhara Club by 1-0 goal in the opening match at Bir Sherestha Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium on Saturday.

After a barren first half, local midfielder Mannaf Rabbi, off a cross from Portuguese forward Esmael Ruti Tavares Cruz Da Silva in the 59th minute.

The day’s match started after an inaugural function at the same venue. Education Minister Dipu Moni inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.

However, the competition is taking place after is taking place after 3 years. The last edition was held in 2018 when Bashundhara Kings secured the title beating Sheikh Russel KC by 2-1 goals. 

Sheikh Russel, which formed a strong 31-member squad including four new foreigners and five national stars, were confident enough to regain their title. 

With the day’s feat, the club earned a total of three points. They will play their next match against Air Force Football Team at the same venue on December 1 at 8pm.
