UNICEF Representative Sheldon Yate calls on Speaker Shirin Sharmin

UNICEF representative in Bangladesh Sheldon Yate paid a courtesy call to the Bangladesh National Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury MP at her office in Dhaka on Monday.

During the meeting, they discussed in detail the issues of child health, prevention of violence against women and children, climate change and public health.

Sheldon Yate proposes to work with the United Nations on the poorest children affected by climate change. The Speaker agreed to the proposal and suggested a speedy start of work for one year at an early stage. At this point she requested Sheldon to take up a pilot project to build a skilled workforce.

The Speaker said that women and children should work together at public and private levels for education, public health and prevention of violence against women and children. She mentioned that it is very important to include children's budget separately in the national budget.

Later, the UN Resident Coordinator Mia Seppo paid a farewell call on the Speaker at her office today.

During the meeting, they discussed in detail the Covid-19 situation, women's rights, prevention of violence against women and gender equality.

Senior officials of the Secretariat were present during the occasion.
