The High Court has required a list of mills involved in polishing coarse rice and selling those as minikate and najirsail in the market.
The HC also directed the government authorities concerned to submit a report whether the polished rice being sold in the market is detrimental to human health.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to show cause as to why production and sale of polished rice shall not be declared illegal.
Cabinet secretary, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, secretaries of home, health, food, agriculture and commerce, environment DG, chiefs of RAB, BSTI, Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection, Rice Research Institute, Agriculture Research Institute and Auto Rice Mills Owners Association president/ secretary will have to submit reply within three weeks.
The HC wanted list of rice mills producing and selling polished rice within four months.
Citing various reports, HRPB president and Supreme Court lawyer Manzill Murshid told the court that polished rice is allegedly devoid of zinc and other food values, causing type-2 diabetics.
