Armed Forces Day observed (Updated)

Armed Forces Day was observed across the country with due solemnity and enthusiasm on Sunday marking the founding of Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.

This day is observed every year since Bangladesh Armed Forces comprising army, navy and air force launched an all-out attack on the occupation forces of Pakistan on this day during our Liberation War in 1971.

After the independence of the country, this historic day is observed as the Armed Forces Day every year.

The day’s programme began with the offering of special prayers after Fazr prayers in all mosques in all the cantonments, naval and air force bases throughout the country seeking divine blessings for the well-being and prosperity of the nation and progress of the armed forces.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths at ‘Shikha Anirban’ (the Eternal Flame) at Dhaka Cantonment in the morning to pay homage to the members of the Armed Forces who laid down their lives during our Liberation War in 1971.

At that time, a smartly-turned out contingent drawn from Army, Navy and Air Force presented a guard of honour to the President and the Prime Minister, while bugle played the last post.

After laying the wreaths, the President and Prime Minister signed the visitor’s book on the premises of Shikha Anirban.

Earlier on arrival of President and Prime Minister at Shikha Anirban, chiefs of the three services and the principal staff officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division received them.

Later, Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan also laid wreaths at ‘Shikha Anirban’ on behalf of their respective forces.

From the Shikha Anirban, the Prime Minister went to the Armed Forces Division. She was received by Prime Minister’s security adviser, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces and the Director General.

Prime Minister’s Security Adviser, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister was connected through VTC and gave a reception to the family members of the Bir Shresthas and selected gallantry award-winning freedom fighters at the Army Multipurpose Complex in Dhaka Cantonment.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, the Liberation War Affairs Minister was present personally and handed over the Peacetime Medal of 2020-2021 to five-member of Army, two-member of Navy and one-member of Air Force.

About 75 freedom fighters and their successors, including relatives of 7 Bir Shrestha, attended the reception.

Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of Armed Forces Division and military and civil officials were present at the programme.

On the occasion, chiefs of the three services called on the President at the Bangabhaban on the day.

Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff accorded receptions to the award-winning freedom fighters of their respective forces and their inheritors.       

Besides, the Chief of Army Staff will give a similar reception to the freedom fighters / their heirs on November 23.

In the afternoon, Prime Minister hosted a reception at Sena Kunja in Dhaka Cantonment. Prime Minister attended the event through VTC.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, as the senior Guest, was received by the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff and wife of the Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces.

Among others, the Chief Justice, ministers and dignitaries of the equivalent status, state ministers and dignitaries of the equivalent status, foreign envoys, heads of international organizations, Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners, Cabinet Secretary, Principle Secretary, MPs of Dhaka, Former military officers, high civil and military officials, leading intelligentsia, senior journalists and other distinguished personalities attended the reception.

Apart from Dhaka, receptions were organized in Barishal, Cox’s Bazar, Bogura, Sylhet, Ghatail, Chittagong, Jashore, Rangpur and Khulna cantonments / bases under the management of the respective area headquarters.

Highlighting the significance of the Armed Forces Day, Bangladesh Television broadcasted the program “Special Anirban” after the Bangla news at 8:00pm on Saturday. Bangladesh Betar broadcasted “Special Durbar” Sunday at 7:30pm.

The program “Special Anirban” and “Special Durbar” will be aired on private TV channels and Radios in phases.

Special supplements will be published in various Bengali and English national dailies on the occasion of the day.

On this occasion, essay and drawing competitions (online based) was organized in the educational institutions run by the Armed Forces.

Bangladesh Navy Ships remained open for visitors at Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Barisal and Chandpur from 2:00pm to till dusk on the occasion of Armed Forces Day-2021 on Sunday.
