Teenager dies as ward boy removed oxygen mask for not getting tip

An 18-year-old boy died at a hospital in Bogura on Tuesday night as a ward boy allegedly removed his oxygen mask for not getting expected tips.

The deceased was identified as Bikash Chandra Karmakar, son of Bishu Chandra Karmakar of Saghata upazila in Gaibandha district.

The incident occurred at 10:30pm at the surgery ward of Bogura's Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMCH).

The accused ward boy, Dholu, went into hiding after the incident.

Bikash, was a student of Dhanarua High School, injured in a motorcycle accident on his way home from work in the evening.

Later, locals took him to the Saghata Upazila Hospital but doctor of the hospital transferred him to SZMCH after receiving primary treatment.

After his surgery at SZMCH, he was sent to the surgery ward on third floor with a bandage on his head and an oxygen mask on his face.

A worker from the hospital's emergency department -- who was pushing the patient's stretcher -- demanded a Tk 200 tip at the time. Bishu Chandra gave him Tk 150 but the worker became enraged, removed the oxygen mask and left the ward, said Sachin Chandra Karmakar, deceased's uncle.

Bikash was fighting for breath right after the incident, later a doctor arrived and declared him dead, Sachin added.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities has formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident.

The committee has been asked to submit the report within five working days.

Dr Abdul Wadud, deputy director of the hospital, confirmed the matter to media.
