Attempt on Anvir’s life: Investors concerned, protest rages on

Various types of harassment including extortion, filing of false cases and death threat continue unabated. Businessmen are the prime target of this ever-escalating criminality. Especially the top businessmen and entrepreneurs of the country are engulfed in a climate of fear following a botched assassination attempt on the life of Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir. The heinous assassination plot, allegedly perpetrated by Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, MP from Chattogram-12 constituency (Patiya), and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun, has sent shock waves among top businessmen of the country. In this atmosphere of fear and intimidation no enterprise can thrive, no one can feel secure. About investment climate and job creation, the less said the better.

Business leaders have rightly pointed out that the assassination attempt on Bashundhara MD’s life is a threat not only to the country’s largest business conglomerate, but also the whole economy of the country. They said if the perpetrators and masterminds of the incident are not exemplarily punished, it will embolden the culture of impunity and choke economic growth. Condemnation for the plot poured in from top business associations of the country including BKMEA, BTMEA and Chittagong Commerce and Industries. There is a palpable sense of anger among the top businessmen of the country. They are facing frequent harassments, which looks ominous for the country and the economy. Therefore, they have sought intervention from the highest level of the government in curbing the lawless elements bedeviling the country’s business environment.

The people at large are also disturbed by the growing harassment of business community. The attempt on the life of Bashundhara MD in particular has shocked the people as spontaneous protest movements continued all over the country for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. The call for justice is getting louder by the day. Their only demand is: the government must get to the bottom of this assassination plot, find out the real culprits and bring them to justice. We hope the government will take cognizance of the simmering anger among business community and the people, ensure justice and do what is needed to safeguard the investors against all sort of harassments.
