Plot to Kill Bashundhara MD: Protests instensify

Protests continue to grow across the country against the plot to assassinate Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir as hundreds of people are joining rallies and human chains every day.

On the fourth day on Tuesday, protest programmes were held in different parts of the country when the participants voiced concern over the assassination plot and demanded that the government find out the perpetrators and mete out exemplary punishment to them through the judicial process.

Terming the attempt obstacles to investment and employment, the protesters urged the government to ensure security of the lives and property of the businessmen for maintaining the normal flow of business.

Foiling an attempt to kill the Bashundhara Group Managing Director, police on Friday arrested a young man, Saiful Islam Saad, who initially confessed that he tried to kill the country’s business tycoon at the behest of Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury and his son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun.

Immediately after the arrest, the youth also confessed to police that he was given a good amount of money to accomplish the mission to kill the Bashundhara Group MD. A Dhaka court on Sunday placed him on a three-day remand to find out the masterminds.

People arranged rallies and human chains in different districts, including Dhaka, Dinajpur, Satkhira, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Tangail, Manikganj, Joypurhat, Kishoreganj, Sylhet and Gopalganj, on Tuesday.

The participants in the protest programmes alleged that the attempt to kill Sayem Sobhan Anvir was aimed at thwarting the country's advancement as Bashundhara Group is contributing greatly to the economic stability through large-scale investment in major manufacturing sectors as well as employment generation.

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited strongly condemned the repeated attempts to assassinate Sayem Sobhan Anvir, also chairman of the sports club, and demanded immediate arrest of the conspirators.

The club leaders made the demand at a press conference at the Dhaka City Football Committee office at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital.

Dhaka

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited strongly condemned the repeated attempts to assassinate Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Chairman of the sports club Sayem Sobhan Anvir and demanded immediate arrest of the conspirators.

The club leaders made the demand at a press conference at the Dhaka City Football Committee office at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital on Tuesday.

They also sought neutral investigation into the incident to mete out exemplary punishment to the perpetrators.

Mentioning that they will meet the Home Minister as soon as possible, the club leaders said they will go wherever they need to go to realise their demand.

Director-in-charge of Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Ismat Jamil Akhond Lablu read out a written statement at the press conference.

Sheikh Russel KC vice-chairman Imdadul Haq Milan, director (Sports) Saleh Jaman Selim, director (Finance) Fakhruddin Ahmed, directors Md Rafiqul Alam, Abul Kashem, SM Hasan Zaman, Habibur Rahman Khan, Alimuzzaman Alam, Khalilur Rahman, Mir Mohammad Shahab Uddin Tipu, Hamidul Haque Shamim, Abu Bakar, Belayet Hossain Bepari, Asaduzzaman, SM Jahangir and Al Maruf Enayet were present at the event.

Dinajpur

In Dinajpur, a human chain was formed in front of the local press club around 11:00am, condemning the plot to kill the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

Former President of Dinajpur Union of Journalists Idris Ali, former General Secretary Delwar Hossain, district correspondent of My TV and executive member of Dinajpur Press Club Mukul Chatterjee and district correspondent of the Bangladesh Pratidin and executive member of Dinajpur Press Club Reazul Islam were, among others, present at the human chain.

Satkhira

In Satkhira, a human chain was formed protesting multiple attempts to kill the MD of the country’s leading industrial conglomerate.

Cement traders of the district organised the programme around 11:30am in front of Satkhira Press Club.

The speakers demanded exemplary punishment for the murder plotters.

Lakshmipur

In Lakshmipur, a protest rally and human chain was held demanding arrest of those who were involved in the plot to assassinate Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

Journalists and business community organised the human chain in front of Lakshmipur Press Club around 11:00am.

President of Lakshmipur Press Club Hossain Ahmed Helal, former General Secretary Saidul Islam Pavel, President of district chapter of Bangabandhu Parishad Shahjahan Kamal, President of Lakshmipur Online Journalists Forum Kajal Kayes, journalists Rezaul Karim Parvez and Mamunur Rashid, businessmen Ismail Hossain Bappi, Raju and Nure Alam were, among others, present.

Kishoreganj

In Kishoreganj, a human chain was formed demanding immediate arrest of Whip Shamsul Haque and his son Sharun for their heinous attempt to kill the Bashundhara Group MD.

The programme was held at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Chattar around 11:00am.

Journalists Saifuddin Ahmed Lenin, Shafiq Adnan and Nazrul Islam Khairul, engineers Kamruzzaman and Sheikh Jabed and contractor Mushfiqur Rahman Kanchan spoke on the occasion.

In Narayanganj, locals held a human chain and protest procession in Rupganj upazila against the attempt to assassinate the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

The protest programme was held in Sector-4 of Purbachal sub-town of the upazila.

Former Organising Secretary of upazila Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Md Emon Hasan Khokon, former Vice-president of Dhaka North city BCL Md Ali Hossain Mollah, Md Rahmatullah Rana, General Secretary of Rupganj union Mahila League Lucky Akter, President of Rupganj union BCL Abdul Aziz Mia, social workers Md Kabir Hossain Mollah and Mohammad Rahmatullah were, among others, present.

In Noahkhali, a human chain was held demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the attempt to kill the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

The human chain was formed at Chowmuhani main road around 11:00am on the initiative of the distributors and traders of Bashundhara Cement.

Bashundhara Cement Noakhali district distributor Abu Sufian Md Arif Hossain Tuhin, AGM of Bashundhara Cement Ashiq Ahmed and Manager of Bashundhara Cement Saiful Islam Siddiqui expressed condemnation and protested the attempt to kill the Bashundhara Group MD.

In Mymensingh, a human chain was arranged in Bhaluka upazila demanding arrest and trial of those who were involved in the assassination attempt on Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

The human chain was held around 11:00am under the banner of ‘Sacheton Nagorik Samaj’.

Member Secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Bhaluka regional branch Kamrul Hasan Pathan Kamal, former General Secretary of Bhaluka Press Club Firoz Khan, President of Bhaluka Puja Udjapan Committee Molay Kumar Nandi Manik, journalist Alamgir Hossain, teacher and social worker Shafiqul Islam Khan, General Secretary of Bhaluka Reporters Unity Anwar Hossain Tarafdar and businessman Zahirul Haque, among others, took part in the programme.

In Tangail, Sakhipur Press Club organised a human chain in protest against the plot to assassinate Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

General Secretary of upazila Awami League and former upazila parishad Chairman Shawkat Sikder, Director of DESCO and member of Information and Research Subcommittee of Awami League Engineer Ataul Mahmud, Principal of Boali Degree College Syed Azad, General Secretary of Kaler Kantho Shuvosangha Shamim Al Mamun and others spoke at the programme.

In Manikganj, a human chain was formed in front of Shibalaya Press Club at noon, protesting the assassination plot.

Local correspondent of the daily Kaler Kantho presided over the human chain while district Jubo League Joint Convener Mahbubur Rahman Jony spoke as the chief guest.

Shibalaya Press Club President and Shibalaya correspondent of the Dainik Ittefaq Babul Akter Monjur spoke at the programme as a special guest.

Among others, Shibalaya Press Club General Secretary and Shibalaya correspondent of the Dainik Ajker Patrika Shahidul Islam, upazila Krishak League President Osiur Rahman Siko, former BCL President Selim Reza also spoke on the occasion.

In Joypurhat, a human chain along with a protest rally was held condemning the attempt to kill Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

The programme was held under the banner of ‘Kaler Kantho Shuvosangha and ‘Sacheton Nagorik Samaj’ on the Joypurhat Press Club premises at noon.

The hour-long human chain and protest meeting was chaired by Kaler Kantho’s Joypurhat district correspondent Alamgir Chowdhury.

Abdur Rashid, general secretary of district Communist Party, Ahmed Mosharraf Nannu, president of district unit of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, Shamim Qadir, district correspondent of the Bangladesh Pratidin, Titas Mostafa, president of Kaler Kantho Shuvosangha’s district chapter, and Sujan Kumar Mondal, joint general secretary of district NGO Coordination Committee, were present.

In Sylhet, a human chain was formed protesting the plot to kill Bashundhara Group Managing Director and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir.

The programme was held in front of Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar at noon under the banner of ‘Journalists Working in Sylhet’.

The human chain was presided over by Al Azad, president of Sylhet Press Club, and moderated by Shah Didar Alam Nobel, former general secretary of the club and staff correspondent of the Bangladesh Pratidin.

In Gopalganj, a human chain along with a protest rally was formed condemning the attempt to kill the Bashundhara Group Managing Director.

The human chain was held in front of the deputy commissioner’s office at noon.

Sujan Das, general secretary of Kaler Kantho Shuvosangha, conducted the human chain while former General Secretary of Gopalganj Govt Bangabandhu College Teachers’ Association and President of Shuvosangha Associate Professor Shah Alam presided over the programme.
