Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested five robbers, including president of Kalkini Upazila Unit of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, from Madaripur and Faridpur.

A team of Uttara DB Division captured Tayyab Ali, 42, president of the upazila Sramik Dal, his wife Rima Akhter Happy, 28, Milon Sardar, 30, Monir Hossain, 43 and Bipul Debnath on Wednesday. All of them are hailing from Madaripur and Bhola.

AKM Hafiz Akhter, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), revealed this at a press briefing in the city on Thursday.

A pistol, two bullets, a magazine, a walkie talkie set, a handcuff, Tk 23,000 in cash and 1,363 grams of gold ornaments were seized from them, he said.

He said the arrestees were the members of a robbery gang led by Tayyab. They had long been committing robberies in the airport area of the city and elsewhere by posing themselves as members of police.

They mainly targeted expatriates, who mainly returned from Dubai, and picked up them to their private car from in front of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by impersonating as policemen.

Later, they tortured the victims and robbed their cash and valuables.

After committing the crimes, they dropped the victims on the roadside at any place of the city or its adjoin areas, he said.

“Tayyab has owned a luxurious multi-storey building at Kamrangirchar and he has a silver colour private car by which the crimes were committed,” the police officer said, adding that Milon had also a building in Kamrangirchar. They owned the buildings with the money earned through robberies.

The additional commissioner described that they were arrested regarding a case filed with Turag Police Station in September. According to the case, two men— Russell and Saiful— were forcibly picked up to a private of a group of robbers from Abdullahpur in Turag on September 12.

The criminals robbed their cash and valuables at gunpoint and later dropped them at Diabari crossing.
Hafiz Akhter said that a fresh case was filed against them with Kamrangirchar Police Station under the Arms Act on Thursday.
