The High Court issued a contempt of court rule against Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, his predecessor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique and two others for ignoring apex court order.

Two others facing contempt rule are- Dhaka University Acting Registrar Prabir Kumar Sarkar and former Registrar Md Rezaur Rahman.

They are facing contempt rule for not granting seniority and financial benefits to Prof Ayesha Mahmuda of psychology department of Dhaka University.

A division bench comprising Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order on Thursday following a petition filed by Prof Ayesha.

The HC asked Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman and three others to clarify within four weeks why they shall not be proceeded with for contempt of court.

According to the contempt petition, the HC on August 11, 2009 following a writ petition filed by Ayesha Mahmuda had cancelled the appointments of three Associate Professors Dr Afroza Hossain, Dr Kamal Uddin and Mehjabin Hoque in the psychology department for not having required qualifications.

The HC rather directed the DU authorities to promote Ayesha Mahmuda as Associate Professor and to provide financial benefits accordingly. The court also asked for a compliance report within two months.

Later, on April 8, 2010, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court modified the HC verdict allowing the university authorities to keep Dr Afroza Hossain, Dr Kamal Uddin and Mehjabin Hoque in the department.

But the SC directed the university authorities to grant seniority and financial benefits to petitioner Ayesha Mahmuda.

In violation of the SC order, the Dhaka University authorities granted seniority and benefits to Dr Kamal Uddin instead of Ayesha Mahmuda, prompting Prof Ayesha to file contempt petition.
