Local and international engineers and workers are working in multiple shifts to complete the work of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport ahead of the schedule.

Once completed, the new terminal will change the look of the entire airport and drastically improve passenger services.

The third terminal of the airport has been designed by renowned architect Rohani Baharin, who is famous for designing Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 3.

The project work is now progressing in full swing across 230,000 square metres of the project area.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) informed that 24 percent of the construction work has already been completed.

“Even during the onslaught of Covid-19, the construction work did not stop for a single day and around 4,000- 5,000 local and international workers are working on the project maintaining all the Covid-19 safety guidelines,” AKM Maksudul Islam, project director of the third terminal, told the Daily Sun.

He said the construction work is moving faster than the draft plan, which makes him hopeful of opening the third terminal before the scheduled time, which is at the end of 2023.

One-fourth of the project has been completed with the installation of about 400 pillars of the huge cargo terminal covering 27,000 square meters.

Air Vice-Marshal M Mafidur Rahman, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), said, “We are trying to complete the work ahead of schedule. The project will be visible from the outside within December this year.”

South Korean Samsung is working on the construction of a third terminal at the airport with two Japanese companies, Mitsubishi and Fujita.

In its current form, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport can handle eight million passengers a year. Once the third terminal is complete, the airport will be able to serve over 20 million passengers every year.

CAAB said five powerful bombs were recovered from the construction site. Even then the work did not stop. Construction work is progressing rapidly with caution.

There will be 1,200 car parking facilities, 120 check-in counters, 12 boarding bridges, 64 departure and 64 arrival immigration desks to serve passengers in the shortest possible time. Capacity will be created to serve 20 million passengers annually.

At present, the two terminals at Dhaka airport can accommodate only 12 aircraft at a time, but the new terminal will have the facility to park 37 aircraft at a time. Also, there will be 26 baggage scanning machines, 11 body scanners, 12 boarding bridges and 16 luggage belts.

The terminal building will be 230,000 square meters. It will have a touch of advanced architecture and will host all modern facilities inside.

The third terminal will be fitted with several straight escalators. There will arrangements for those who cannot walk long distances.

There will also be baby care facilities, a children’s play area, movie lounge, food court, WiFi facility, and duty-free shops at 14 spots of the terminal.

The dream metro rail will be connected to the third terminal of this airport. A separate station will also be built. Through this, passengers coming to Bangladesh will be able to travel to their destinations by metro rail without leaving the airport.

The initial feasibility report for the construction and expansion of the Third Terminal and the draft Master Plan was taken to the Prime Minister's Office in 2015.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on October 24, 2017.

The work on the construction of the terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on December 29, 2019.
