LGRD Minister visits Saidpur Fecal Sludge Management plant

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam on Friday visited Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) plant in Saidpur of Rangpur.

The country’s one of the biggest FSM plant has been initiated by Saidpur Municipality with support from WaterAid and implemented by local partner SKS Foundation.

Helal Uddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary of Local Government Division, Hasin Jahan, Country Director of WaterAid, Md Saifur Rahman, Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) and Rafika Akhtar Jahan, Saidpur Municipality Mayor along with high officials from municipality, WaterAid and SKS Foundation were also present during the visit. 

The field visit was hosted jointly by Saidpur Municipality, SKS Foundation and WaterAid.

The minister oversaw the process of how fecal waste and kitchen waste are being recycled and turning them into organic soil conditioners fulfilling the entire sanitation value chain with effective business model. The successful visit ended by planting a palm sapling by the minister at the FSM plant.

On this occasion, Hasin Jahan said, ‘The FSM Plants operated by municipality with support from WaterAid and partners have been cited as a replicable model in the National 8th Five Year Plan. The Saidpur FSM plant is a model plant that demonstrates how municipalities can scale up to protect the environment, along with achieving the SDG 6.2.1 targets, which is access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all.”

She mentioned that DPHE has already taken up initiative to replicate similar model across the country, which is much appreciated.

“We look forward to see the LGRD ministry and DPHE to support municipalities for operation and maintenance of FSM plants which will ensure safety managed sanitation services” said Hasin Jahan.

WaterAid Bangladesh is also working with the Municipality in Tangail district’s Shakhipur and initiated a similar FSM plant t to use composts as soil conditioners locally.
