Nat’l Junior athletics ends with Sumaya’s record in 200m

BKSP sprinter Sumaya Dewan, who became the fastest woman in the U-19 group, also left her mark in 200m with a new record as she broke a 19-year-old record on the second and last day of Shahid Sheikh Russel 37th National Junior (age-level) Athletics Competition that concluded at the Army Stadium in the capital on Saturday.

Sumaya took 25.35sec to beat Noakhali sprinter Shamsunnahar Chumki’s 25.60sec who had been unbeaten since 2002.

However, Sumaya became the fastest woman’s in 100m with 12.20sec and Md Afzal Hossain from Narail District Sports Association emerged as the fastest man with 10:71sec.

Another athlete Juyayria Ferdous from Jhenaidah made a national record in the girl’s shot put after 17-year. Juyayria recorded a 9.80m distance to beat BKSP athlete Afsana Mim’s 9.36m distance which was made in 2004.

Apart from these, two other national records were made in the men’s and the women’s discus throw events of the competition. 

Pabna District Sports Association athlete Masum Ahmed recorded 38.22m distance to beat BKSP athlete Milon Hossain’s 35.60m in the men’s event and Noakhali athlete Bibi Hajera recorded 29.88m distance to beat her own previous record of 28.96m distance.

In the boy’s and girl’s (U-17s) 100m races, Netrokona DSA sprinter Md Nasim and BKSP sprinter Rekha Akter emerged as the champions. Nasim took 11sec and Rekha 12.80sec.

A total of 41 events in four groups – boys, girls, men’s and women’s -- took place in the competition. BKSP secured the top place on the medal table with 18 golds, 11 silvers and 40 bronze medals; Narail DSA second with 10 golds, 5 silvers and 8 bronze medals and Sylhet third with 3 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze medal.
