Donor Nurani Talukder among 7 sent to jail

A Mymensingh court on Saturday sent eight people, including Zakat donor Nurani Talukder, to jail in a case filed in connection with the deaths of 27 poor people in a stampede while collecting Zakat clothes in the district town on Friday.
The accused are Nurani Talukder alias Mohammad Shamim, owner of 'Nurani Jarda Factory', his son Hedayet and other employees of the factory Iqbal,40 , Arman, 35, Alamgir, 34, Asadul, 32, Abdul Hamid, 36 and driver Parvej, 35.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahsan Habib passed the order when police produced them before the court and sought seven-day remand for each of them.
Earlier, Sub-inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam on Saturday morning filed a case in this connection.
The court also fixed Sunday for hearing on the remand prayer. The eight people were arrested soon after the incident.
On Friday, at least 27 poor women and children were killed and 50 others injured in the stampede as they crowded for receiving Zakat clothes distributed by local Nurani Jarda Factory near Mymensingh municipality office.
