A 3rd grader who was set on fire allegedly by his step-father in Satkhira last week, succumbed to his injuries at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute (SHNBPSI) in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nazmul, a student of Ichapur Primary School in Kajla village of Kaliganj upazila.

Najmul used to live with his grandmother Fatema Khatun in Kajla village.

On Friday night, Nazmul’s step-father Sobuj, along with his family members, set the house of Nazmul's grandmother on fire. At the time, the two were fast asleep inside.

Later, the victims were rushed to the SHNIBPS, where Nazmul succumbed to his injuries in the morning.

Fatema Khatun is undergoing treatment at the hospital, but her condition is said to be critical, police said.

Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said they have detained the accused, Sobuj. "An FIR is being lodged in the case," he said.
